Why You Should Be Excited for Ben Affleck as Batman

Good Morning Batboys and Batgirls!!

Ben Affleck has been cast as the new Batman in Zack Snyder’s (already dubbed by the internet) “Batman VS Superman” and the fanboys (and girls) couldn’t be more pissed off.

I’m here to settle everyone down (or piss everyone off even more) and tell you why I believe that this casting news may actually be the right move.

First, let’s get this out of the way, I have not seen “Man of “Steel” yet but have always been a pretty big fan of Zack Snyder. Yes, Snyder can get a little carried away with his “style” and sometimes sacrifices plot for crazy colors and scenes (I’m looking at you Sucker Punch) but overall he seems to be a nerd/fanboy like the rest of us and really puts his heart into his films. Superman and Batman fans should be excited about this and accept that although this will be nothing like Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, at least we are sticking with someone who understands superheros.

Now onto the reason you clicked the title link, Ben Affleck as Batman. Sure Affleck has made some terrible terrible decisions (Daredevil, Jersey Girl, and lets add one more terrible for Gigli) but those were all in 2003 and its 2013 and since then he has rocked the house acting in Argo, The Town, Clerks, and Dogma to name a few. His roles in those should wipe the slate clean and take away that terrible taste in our mouths from his acting decisions in 2003 (Hey everyone has a bad year right?).

Also I feel like Affleck is going to make Batman more relate-able to us fans. Yes Batman is an eccentric billionaire but when you strip away the cowl he is really just a man with gadgets (this fact is what made Keaton such a great Batman). There is no doubt Christian Bale was awesome as Batman and had a great origin story, but I always felt like he was a embellished version of Batman, yes he was human and could be hurt, but he was also a little too focused on being eccentric and getting the girl. What I liked about Keaton (and hopefully Affleck) is they brought Batman back to reality. Sure they don’t look like you and I but at least they are closer then buffed out Bale. With Affleck and Keaton, you really believe they are just regular guys with a lot of money and time, and want revenge, not glory.

Ben Affleck

Snyder has already stated that in his version, Batman will be much older (roughly 11 years) then superman. I think casting Affleck and letting him play it as “Joe regular” will be a great contract to the young and invincible superman. And if not, well hey we can always join forces and make fun of Kilmer, Clooney, bat nipples.

Enjoy the weekend and let the responses fly!!!

I’m fine with Affleck as Batman. He’s capable with the right material. The idea itself of Batman up against Superman right off the bat, while Superman is still new? Doesn’t really interest me very much. I think the instant adversarial mashup concept is problematic.

I had the same reservation when it was first announced, I wanted another Superman movie. HOWEVER, this could really work. Batman can act like one of theater goers who was pissed off about the destruction in Man of Steel. He could think Superman is a danger and possibly guide him into becoming a better hero. More like adversary then mentor and friend.

I just want a Bryan Singer Superman sequel.

I’m cool with Affleck as Batman. He has redeemed himself with me over the last few years. Not only are his movies that he directs great, but he has matured as an actor as well. Plus, not to piss people off, but you don’t have to have a Marlon Brando to pull off Batman in an action movie. Sure there are going to be some scenes where he needs to be somber, enraged, heart-broken, or whatever, but Affleck is perfectly capable of bringing whatever emotional impact to that roll that people are imagining is needed.

I know that Bruce Wayne has a lot going on in his head, and is a very troubled person, but to the public he is a care-free playboy, and Affleck can do that no problem.

Also, just throwing this out there, at least Affleck is tall and broad-shouldered, meaning he will actually look more like the comic book Batman than any of the other people who’ve played him.

  • You really have a crush on Affleck.

  • You are the only one.

    Probably. Still:

    A. Returns is criminally underrated.

    B. Compare X2 to X-Men. Returns 2 woulda been brilliant.

  • We’ll never, ever know. I feel bad for Brandon Routh though. I liked his Superman.

His penis is also bigger than Bale’s….so I have been led to believe, but I’ll be looking for the bulge in the new costume.
