This is Chris with my take on what looks cool for toys coming up in 2013. I’m sure Vincent will have much different opinions. This is only my take and a light look at some of what’s ahead for the year in toys.
Mezco’s offerings were small but they had one killer item that put them in my #5 slot: Breaking Bad action figures!
#4 McFarlane Toys
McFarlane Toys isn’t quite where they were in the 90s but they do still create, in my opinion, the best sculpts outside of Hot Toys. A lot of their proposed line for 2013 is more of their existing lines: Spawn, Halo, NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA. But the standout is their Walking Dead offerings starting with their very impressive design for the box set of season 3 of the AMC tv show:
It’s a replica of the tanks that the Governor has in his secret room. The zombie heads can be arranged in any order you want, it lights up AND you can fill it with water. Creepy!
They also have some great sculpts for figures based on the tv show.
NECA does licensed stuff and is getting closer and closer to the amazing sculpts that McFarlane pulls off. They aren’t very posable but they look gorgeous on a shelf. It’s really a good year to be a nerd with disposable income. NECA has figures based off of Gremlins, Robocop, Predator, Aliens and Robocop from the 80s and then stuff from The Hobbit, Avengers, and Lone Ranger from today!
Most of Hasbro’s offerings don’t appeal to me but they seem well done. Lots of new Star Wars action figures, including their new high-end 6-inch figures (dubbed the Black Series). Lots of GI Joe Retaliation figures to coincide with the release of the movie. Transformers including Titan Metroplex from the video game series. Tons of new Marvel Legends action figures based on Wolverine, Ultimate Spider-Man, Thor: The Dark World, and Iron Man. But the most exciting stuff for me is the extension of KRE-O, their building blocks. This year, they will add TONS of Transformers mini-figs, GI Joe, and Star Trek!
Who else could #1 be? #2 was a hint at where my interests lie. In 2013, we’ll get more Chima sets, big Star Wars sets including Jabba’s Sail Barge with a Max Rebo minifig, a gorgeous pirate ship for Lord of the Rings and tons more. 2013 will be a good year for Lego fans!
RUNNER UP (#6): Bif Bang Pow!
Why? Two words: Venture Brothers!
Bif Bang Pow! also has some other licensed toys, mostly bobble heads and Meg0-style dolls, based on Doctor Who, Big Bang Theory, Dexter, original Battlestar Galactica and other nerd properties but the standout is definitely these 3.75″ action figures based on the hilarious Adult Swim show. They also have dolls based on supporting characters like Shore Leave, who is Venture Brothers’ version of Shipwreck from GI Joe but much gayer and much more badass.
