Top 10 Sci-Fi Actors Who are Missing Fingers

E.T.'s glowing finger

There’s actually a lot of actors in Hollywood who are missing fingers. Who knew? Well, I did. So I put together a list. Because that’s just how my mind works. I tried to keep only people who had some sort of sci-fi connection so Matthew Perry from Friends and Gary Burghoff from M.A.S.H. were out. Unless you disagree with up to two of my choices. Then just plug those guys in.

Christian Bale's injured finger

#10 Christian Bale

Christian Bale is really well known for playing Batman/Bruce Wayne in the recent trilogy by Christopher Nolan. He also appeared in sci-fi films The Prestige and Terminator: Salvation. This is the most recent story in this list: in 2009, he sliced off his left index finger in a dirtbike accident. He claims he felt no pain but that people nearly faint when they saw it. Since the accident, he’s had it surgically repaired so it’s not easy to see what it looks like anywhere. There is a photo shoot he did with GQ in 2009 that shows his finger heavily bandaged.

Vince Vaughn's thumb

#9 Vince Vaughn

Vince Vaughn was in Jurassic Park 2 so that gives him the required nerd cred to show up on a Robot’s Pajamas list. When he was 17, Vince was in a car accident that severed the tip of his right thumb. He now refers to it as his “penis thumb” for its unique look.

Harold Lloyd and his missing fingers

#8 Harold Lloyd

One of the great silent film stars, and therefore a pioneer in film. He had an uncredited role in a very early Oz film but most of his roles were down-to-earth comedies. In 1919, Harold Lloyd was holding what he thought was a smoke bomb for a publicity shot. He was lighting a cigarette with the lit fuse and it exploded blowing off his thumb and forefinger. From then on he wore a glove, but it was noticeable if you looked for it. Above is a photo of Lloyd bowling without wearing his glove.

Buster Keaton's missing finger

#7 Buster Keaton

Buster Keaton was another famous silent movie star. His most famous sci-fi role is from the 1961 Twilight Zone episode “Once Upon a Time” where he played a time traveler. As a child, he got his hand caught in a wash wringer and it crushed his right index finger. It was amputated at the top knuckle. You can see it in the publicity still for The Navigator above.

Lee Van Cleef's missing finger

#6 Lee Van Cleef

Lee Van Cleef was best known for playing a badass in Westerns, especially The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. But he also appeared in the Twilight Zone episode “The Grave,” the monster movie It Conquered the World, and the awful mid-80s ninja show The Master, where he taught ninja stuff to Tim Van Patten and they drove around helping people. In 1960, Van Cleef took a break from acting and was remodeling his studio. He managed to cut off his middle finger. You can see it pretty prominently in a closeup from For a Few Dollars More where he draws his pistol.

Pat Hingle's missing finger

#5 Pat Hingle

Pat Hingle was a character actor from the 50s through 2006. He popped up in all sorts of genre roles like Twilight Zone, Muppets in Space, and Maximum Overdrive. But he’s best known for portraying Commissioner Gordon in the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher Batman films. In 1960 he fell two stories down an elevator shaft (the elevator had stalled, he climbed out and then lost his balance and fell). He had TONS of injuries that took him a year to recover from including losing the pinky finger on his left hand. Pat Hingle didn’t walk a lot of red carpets or do left-handed things so there’s not a lot of photos of his finger. Here’s a photo from an interview he did later in life where you can see his nub. Tough dude.

Telly Savalas' deformed finger

#4 Telly Savalas

Telly Savalas is best known as Kojak from the police procedural tv show of the same name. But he gets his nerd cred from playing James Bond’s nemesis, Blofeld, in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. He gets a few more nerd points (and lowers his overall career) by voicing a Rock Lord in the Go-Bots Movie. No strange accident here. Savalas was simply born with a deformed left index finger. Above, you can see it in a still from the James Bond film he did.

Daryl Hannah's missing finger

#3 Daryl Hannah

A beautiful lady without a finger? Yup, it’s true. The lady from Splash and Blade Runner usually wears a prosthetic in films to cover it up. She lost the tip of her left index finger in a childhood accident. She was playing with her grandmother’s mobility chair and severed her finger two joints down!

Walter Jones' missing finger

#2 Walter Emmanuel Jones

Probably the least known name on this page as an actor, but we all know his character. Walter Jones played Zack, the original Black Power Ranger, who created Hip Hopkiddo as his personal fighting style. Walter lost his middle finger in an undisclosed childhood accident at age 4. He is able to casually hide it most of the time on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers show, but if you look, you can spot it.

James Doohan's missing finger

#1 James Doohan

If you thought Walter Jones did a good job hiding it, how about the fact that Scotty from Star Trek was missing a finger? Did you ever notice that? Anytime there was a close up on a console, they used a stunt hand. But yeah, James Doohan is missing his right middle finger. In 1940, Doohan was in the Royal Canadian Artillery in England for training during World War 2. He had fought in D-Day, storming Normandy Beach and taking out two snipers. But one night he was crossing between command posts and a nervous sentry shot him six times, including his finger, which had to be amputated. I’m gonna say it: that sentry was a jerk.
