The Fleet Grows with X-Wing Miniatures Expansions Wave 3!

Fantasy Flight Games has announced their next wave of expansions for X-Wing Miniatures and it’s four brand new ships to the game. The TIE Bomber and B-Wing were expected and the Imperial Shuttle was a definite maybe, but the HWK-290 was a little unexpected. These expansion ships are due the “3rd Quarter of 2013”, meaning soonish.

The TIE Bomber, B-Wing, and Imperial Shuttle aka Lambda Class, are all from the Star Wars movies with HWK-290 being the first expanded universe vehicle to appear in X-Wing Miniatures. The HWK-290 is most famous for being piloted by Kyle Katarn, star of the Dark Forces series of video games. I’m not surprised that they went EU over prequels. The next wave I’d like to see Dash Rendar’s ship and the TIE Phantom, which in my opinion is one of the coolest looking TIE Fighters of all time.

The B-Wing, TIE Bomber, and Shuttle are no brainer purchases, but I’m not sure if the HWK-290 is a must buy for me. I haven’t even had time to play, much less build up a fleet of Wave 2 ships before the announcement of these expansions! I was going to post a review of Millennium Falcon awhile back, but now that’s super old news. Oh well. I can’t wait until I have some time to play X-Wing Miniatures again, because this game rocks my socks off.

Note: If you want to know more of what the game is like my X-Wing Miniatures review is here.

  • I’m thinking that they should consider doing a land-based version of this game. It could operate pretty much the same way with the same rules and tokens but would open the vehicles up tremendously.

Another idea I had that seems fun to me would be to sell a raised platform that you could move onto to help show the 3 dimensional nature of space combat.

I’m thinking of painting my own mat to play on with a custom starfield.

  • They want this game to appeal to a wider base than those who would be into a more realistic table top aerial dog fight, that’s why there are no 3d rules. Maybe if they could do an expansion, but damn there’s a lot of rules to remember now as it is.

    You know that Q3 2013 means Q1 2014… maybe.
