I got into the table top space war game X-Wing miniatures in a bad way. Right now I’ve got a pretty large fleet of fighters. I’ve gotten my tiny space ship buying obsession pretty well under control now, and while the new expansions announced by Fantasy Flight Games are pretty intriguing, they’re not really grabbing me, thankfully. However, the announcement of Star Wars Armada might be a real problem.
You see, Armada is basically X-Wing, but on a larger scale. Though it looks like there’s a lot more to do, command wise, to make sure your fleet is successful. From Fantasy Flight Games:
In Star Wars: Armada, you assume the role of fleet admiral, serving with either the Imperial Navy or Rebel Alliance. You assemble your fleet and engage the enemy. Using the game’s unique maneuver tool, you steer your capital ships across the battlefield, even while squadrons of starfighters buzz around them. Then, as these ships exchange fire, it’s your job to issue the tactical commands that will decide the course of battle and, perhaps, the fate of the galaxy.
I trust that Fantasy Flight can make a satisfying experience that’s different enough from X-wing to be worth the purchase. I love that you command whole squadrons of fighters. I’d love to have a game where you command large ships and it *felt* like you were commanding large ships, complete with maintaining weapons, shields, and engineering junk. And having it set in the Star Wars universe makes it a pretty compelling pull for me.
It’s got a hefty price of a hundred bucks for the set and you can bet that they’ll be releasing expansions. Expansions that you’ll absolutely need to have!
I’ve got to find a way from stopping myself from Star Wars Armada getting it’s hooks into me! If there’s some compatibility with X-Wing somehow, I’m screwed.
