Vincent’s Comment: I love today’s Star Trek Problems for a couple of reasons. The first is that it makes fun of a silly and dangerous current law on the books in many states. And that’s what good science fiction does, calls out problems in our society in a new light. I don’t think Star Trek: The Next Generation did that as often as the original series did. Seemed like they were more worried about warp fields, tachyon pulses, and gibbly glops.

The second reason why I love this strip is the final panel. It’s very 1980s kids cartoon lesson of the day. Good for Geordi. He’s got courage a plenty!

That’s funny, when Star Trek was preachy, it was very rarely preachy in a propagandist, intellectually dishonest way. Unlike this strip.

It’s not meant to critique Star Trek’s story structure. I was having fun with exaggerated versions of their personalities. Your mileage may vary, of course.

  • Interesting that this comment comes from a guy who uses a TV show featuring guns going boom.

And I beg to differ. The black / white, white / black dudes in TOS are way more over the top than this strip is.
