Nutbusters XXX: A Review of a Ghosbusters Remake (NSFW)

Such high production values.

With all the remakes that Hollywood keeps making, it’s not surprising that a few have slipped under the radar (anyone remember the Footloose remake?). However, I was surprised to learn about a remake of the beloved 1980s sci-fi/horror/comedy Ghostubsters. And I had missed it’s theatrical debut, too! You’d think that there would be more of an uproar that Ghostbusters got the remake treatment, but perhaps we’ve reached critical mass where the internet has given up and just shrugged its shoulders as beloved property after beloved property gets shoved out into theaters to wither and die like unwanted fruit.

Onto the remake itself. Part of the fact that this film might have escaped scrutiny is that it’s title is “Nutbusters XXX” (hereafter abbreviated as NB), lending me to believe that it wasn’t exactly sanctioned by Sony pictures, the owners of the Ghosbusters copyright.

The cover of the NB case shows that the filmmakers have gone in a bold new direction as the “Ghostbusters” are ladies and the form that Gozer the Gozerian takes is a man. You’d think that they would have wanted to save that as a surprise, but in this day and age when major plot points are revealed in a trailer, I guess you have to expect this sort of thing. Oh and there’s graphic nudity right on the cover. I guess when you’re just another remake in a sea of remakes, you have to set yourself apart somehow.

The first scene of the film. Also the first half of the film.

When the movie started, I wondered if something was wrong with my DVD player. It begins with the Keymaster and the Gatekeeper meeting up. Did I accidentally skip the entire first 2/3rds of the movie? Nope, that’s how it starts out at the very end of the plot of Ghostbusters. I thought that I might be in for a real treat, that the filmmakers had decided to do a non-liner interpretation of the film like Pulp Fiction. I quickly found out that I was wrong. In fact, the scene between the Keymaster and the Gatkeeper goes on for a full 30 minutes! And most of that time they’re having sex!

When they’re finally done we cut to the Ghostbusters confrontation with Gozer the Gozerian. I’ve mentioned that the gender roles have been swapped, but the other notable change is that instead of four Ghosbusters, we only have three of them and they look really similar. Most notably absent is a black Ghostbuster. For shame, Hollywood! Aside from the racial diversity, Winston was the every day working man that gave the audience an insight we didn’t get with the other Ghostbusters. He was the average working stiff’s look into the world of the Ghostbusters. By completely eliminating that role, we really miss out as an audience and the film suffers greatly.

The opening menu is the most exciting part.

Spoilers: Once the Ghostbusters or Nutbusters cross streams a really strange thing happens. Gozer is hurt and almost down for the count, so the team decides that they must have sex with him to “finish him off”. Well, I didn’t see that one coming!

At this point one of the Ghostbusters leaves, so we’re left with two Ghostbusters. Why does she leave? Why not have her for this scene? Who knows. There’s such strange choices made in this film, like the choice to have one terrible microphone so the Ghostbusters have to yell their dialog to be heard.

End Spoilers.

Nutbusters XXX is one of the most bizarre films I’ve ever seen and it gives even poorly received remakes a bad name. Don’t waste your time with this one. Hollywood needs to come up with new ideas!

  • Chris Piers

First of all, that was hilarious. Second, they really just had two scenes?!

  • Yep just two. Which made this tough because there was less funny stuff to describe and hardly any pictures that I could post. It was just two short bits and lots of sex that went on for far too long.

  • “…He was the average working stiff’s look into the world of the Ghostbusters. By completely eliminating that role, we really miss out as an audience and the film suffers greatly.”

Winston is key to the Ghostbusters, clearly the porn parody people missed that completely.

  • Wait… porn parody?
