Friday Round Up: X-Men vs. Ivan Ooze

x-men apocalypse

Above is the latest photo, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, of Apocalypse in the next X-Men movie. Below is a photo of the Power Rangers villain Ivan Ooze. Basically I’m arguing, he does not look good. HOWEVER, I also did not think Quicksilver looked good in the photos of him before the last movie and he ended up being the best part of X-Men: Days of Future Past. So while he does not look great, I am advocating a wait and see approach. Oscar Isaac is a good actor so maybe he can make it work. Also? Storm and Psylocke look fantastic. Read on for more toy, movie, TV and other news coming out of this past week’s Comic Con.

TV

Green Arrow season 4

Arrow season 4 seems set to really embrace its comic book origins. He will wear a new uniform and the premiere episode is called Green Arrow. Maybe that’s his new identity? The villain will be Damian Dahrk, who controls HIVE, a terrorist organization. Neal McDonough has been cast as Dahrk. The season will apparently also introduce mysticism. Arrow’s showrunner said this past week that he’s optimistic that they can get Matt Ryan to appear as Constantine even though NBC cancelled that show. That sounds pretty rad.

Here is the trailer for Fear the Walking Dead. It’s looking strong. In some ways, yeah, it’s cynical to create a new Walking Dead show because it’s really just to make more money. On the other hand, it’s pretty much a blank slate for the writers and that can only help. Also, it’s feeding the demand that exists. Looks like they have good actors, a different environment, and a more tightly-knit character dynamic. Could be very good.

MOVIES

Why do the studios try to hold off on trailers until after the big Cons when they show the trailers there? It never works. A leaked version on an iPhone was out instantly so Warner Bros. released the official Suicide Squad trailer. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts. Some of my friends think it looks great but I think it looks pretty drab. I guess I’m more interested in what their actual mission is than in seeing Joker. Speaking of which, this short animation by Film Cow perfectly encapsulates my thoughts on the new tattooed Joker:

And above is the trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I think Wonder Woman looks very cool and I like Affleck’s driven Bruce Wayne. It does look a little depressing seeing superheroes go up against each other. Also? The Kents in these movies continue to be the worst people ever. Pa Kent advises him to never use his powers, not even to save people. Now Ma Kent is telling Superman he doesn’t owe the world anything. What the hell?

hot toys ant-man

I was super glad to see that there will be a Hot Toys 1/6 scale Ant-Man figure. I have all the Marvel heroes from Hot Toys. And I saw Ant-Man last night. Short review? Very, very fun.

gi joe 50

Hasbro had a pretty big G.I. Joe display at Comic Con. Mostly updated versions of the popular characters. You can see more photos at Cool Toy Review.

rocket league

Quick recommendation. Get the game Rocket League. It’s free on PS4 if you have their online service and only $20 otherwise. Totally worth it. I believe it’s also on the XBox One. Basically, you play soccer with RC cars. But the game handles great. I’ve been playing with friends all week and it’s so addictive and fun.

I’m actually pretty excited for Suicide Squad, mostly because I’m really interested in seeing a comic book movie written and directed by somebody like David Ayer. Also, the few seconds of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn seemed like she was nailing that part. Jared Leto’s Joker did nothing for me. I did not find it intriguing, nor did I get the impression that a great character was being ruined in some way.
The new Batman v Superman trailer actually had the opposite effect on me that it seemed to have on everyone else. I was looking forward to the movie, but this trailer is so depressing that it has really lowered my expectations. Part of my misgivings is because of the dour tone, part of it is Ma Kent’s wonderful advice, and the rest is all because of Jesse Eisenberg.
