Good news for Tron fans. Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund, the stars of Tron: Legacy, were announced to return as Quorra and Sam Flynn, respectively, along with the recently confirmed returning director Joseph Kosinski. It’ll be called Tron: Ascension. No word on the plot or whether Bruce Boxleitner (Tron himself) or Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn) are returning. But it will film in Vancouver this Fall. One thing not returning? Daft Punk. That’s too bad. Their music was definitely a highlight of Legacy. Supposedly Skrillex may do the music for part 3. Maybe that could work, but I’m not as excited. I figure this is as good a time as any to point out that the animated series Tron: Uprising, set between Tron and Tron: Legacy was actually very awesome and you can get it on iTunes or Amazon. Great animation, plot, characters, music. Totally worth checking out if you enjoy the world of Tron.

A lot changed for the Twin Peaks comeback that Showtime is producing. They locked in contracts for many of the actors from the old show. And they completely neglected to lock in the most important person first, the guy who co-created the show. Director David Lynch was still negotiating his contract and according to him, Showtime wouldn’t pay what he wanted so… he left! Showtime says they’re still trying to work things out. In the meantime, many of the cast members made the above video, arguing that Showtime needs to not cheap out now. C’mon Showtime, the fans want Twin Peaks but they don’t want it in name only. It needs to have Lynch at the helm!
I honestly thought Agents of SHIELD was only doing “okay” but it looks like season 3 is super-likely. In fact, ABC is planning a spinoff. Not Agent Carter, a new show. Not sure what they can do with the characters they have and the world they’ve created. Only one I can imagine spinning off is maybe Deathlok? In related Marvel tv news, producer Jeff Loeb confirmed one connection between Daredevil and Agents of SHIELD. In a flashback, Matt Murdock’s father is in a boxing match with Carl “Crusher” Creel. He said they specifically noted that Creel is supposed to be 18 then and that it’s the same character who becomes Absorbing Man who showed up on Agents of SHIELD in the present. Also, the red Daredevil costume got leaked but since the show debuts today, I don’t think it’s worth spoiling.
Good news for fans of comedy. Fox announced they renewed Last Man on Earth for a second season and producer Brian Grazer said they’re making 17 episodes of Arrested Development season 5 for Netflix! Love both shows so I’m happy.
Depending on how much you like Star Trek and how much you can tolerate fan films, you might be interested in this trailer for Star Trek: Renegades. It’s basically a fan film made by a bunch of actual Star Trek actors. It’s kind of weird to do since they don’t own the rights. Paramount basically lets fans make fan films as long as they don’t make any money off of it. So I guess the actors just really love Star Trek. It stars Walter Koenig as Admiral Chekov, Tim Russ as Tuvok, Robert Picardo as Dr. Zimmerman. Apparently it’s intended to be a pilot for a new tv show about outcasts and criminals doing covert missions, but I tend to doubt CBS will look at it. I guess it’ll be out on YouTube sometime in the near future.
Fox released the above image of The Thing from their upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. I guess it could look a lot worse but to me, Thing needs a big brow and bright blue eyes. He’s a lovable monster. This version kinda looks like an oatmeal cookie or a bad turd.
The first cast photo for DC’s upcoming Suicide Squad movie got tweeted by writer and director David Ayer. From left to right (first row), we have David Ayer, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez (unknown what role he has but it’s rumored to be El Diablo, a guy with fire powers), Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Adam Beach as another unknown character, Jim Parrack (probably Deathstroke), and Ike Barinholtz (probably Hugo Strange). Second row features Will Smith as Deadshot, Karen Fukuhara as Plastique, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. Whew, that’s a lot of supervillains. There’s some no-brainers for characters like Flagg, Waller, Deadshot, and Boomerang. Plastique, Quinn and Enchantress are also members from various iterations. But I think Bronze Tiger would’ve been another good call to include. One thing I’m not a fan of is that it seems like the tv shows Arrow and Flash are maybe being told not to use these characters anymore. Arrow has featured the Suicide Squad, Deadshot, Deathstroke, and Boomerang and Flash has used Plastique but it seems like this season Deadshot and Deathstroke got written out of the show. That’s… kind of bullshit.
Everything you can remember will get remade. Because you remember it. Anyway, Warner Bros announced they hired a writer for a Gremlins remake. I love the two Gremlins movies. Not super excited about who they hired to write the new one, though: Carl Ellsworth who did the scripts for remakes of Last House on the Left and Red Dawn. I don’t care for either remake. I’m not against remakes. If it’s been 20 years or so, I think it can be okay and there can be new angles to look at. Or remaking a foreign film for a new audience. That’s a fine idea. I’d call the Dawn of the Dead remake pretty good. Cape Fear. The Thing. Scarface. The Fly. Insomnia. The Ring. True Grit. I could list a dozen more. So the concept of a remake is not the issue. But a lazy dash of paint over something just to pump out something recognizable? That’ll always result in a stinker.
Lego Dimensions is the latest video game to incorporate figures that interact or affect the game, like Skylanders, Disney Infinity, or Nintendo Amiibo. But one fun thing about it, like Disney’s, is that it mashes up a bunch of different licenses: DC Superheroes, Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, Wizard of Oz and more. You can pre-order it now on Amazon and the game comes with three figures plus a portal and a mini vehicle. Future downloadable content sets to come. As a Lego fan, I’m very tempted, but the thought of having to buy future pieces of DLC is intimidating. Has anyone gotten into Disney Infinity or Amiibo?
Marvel Comics are building up to a crossover event called Secret Wars and it’s resetting things a little. It’s not wiping out continuity, but it is merging and retconning various things into a new version of the shared universe moving forward. One rumor was that the X-Men would be off in their own world after Secret Wars. The argument was that Marvel wouldn’t want to mix those characters with the ones they own the movie rights to. But that was just a rumor. Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso set the record straight, saying: “No, we’re not segregating the X-Men into their own universe. The X-Men are an integral part of the Marvel Universe. They play a big role in Secret Wars, and those mutants that survive the event will be crucial building blocks for the Marvel Universe moving forward.”
For an interesting look at the business side of things, including a historical perspective, Business Insider wrote this fascinating piece about X-Men and how Disney is sort of burying them now. Meanwhile, I chose to use the image above because Fox is doing just fine with its X-Men movies and the next will be Deadpool. Here we see Ryan Reynolds showing off the new outfit.
