I don’t think we need another Terminator movie, at least not one featuring super old Arnold Schwarzenegger, but damn… the new trailer for Terminator: Genisys does look pretty good. Below is more movie news, tv news, toy news. The key nerd news of the week rounded up for you to comment on!
When Disney purchased Lucasfilm, they didn’t just get Star Wars; they got Indiana Jones, too. But according to the latest Hollywood news, Disney is considering just rebooting the series instead of propping up a 70-year old Harrison Ford in a desert somewhere. Their top choice as Dr. Henry Jones, Jr.? Parks and Rec star (okay, he’s also in Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World) Chris Pratt. Gotta say, I’ve heard worse ideas (Mutt Jones).
What you see above is allegedly the cast of the completely rebooted Ghostbusters, to be directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Freaks and Geeks). Melissa McCarthy is signed for sure and negotiations are now taking place to sign Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. Three SNL stars. Not a bad idea. Supposedly they’re also looking to cast Peter Dinklage as a nutcase who brings the ghosts to New York City. The rumored character descriptions are as follows:
- Erin Gabler: Serious academic at Columbia University (presumed to be Wiig)
- Abby Bergman: Parapsychologist who was Erin’s former academic partner (presumed to be Jones)
- Jillian: Hired to hunt ghosts with Abby (presumed to be McKinnon)
- Patty: An MTA employee who comes across the main ghost (presumed to be McCarthy)
There’s a new Fantastic Four trailer out. It could end up being a good movie but I think it looks to be a poor adaptation. And it’s not because they made Johnny Storm/Human Torch black. That’s fine. It’s more how they seem to skip over what in my opinion are the 3 key points to a Fantastic Four story: bizarre and fantastic worlds, family, humor. This is a very serious take, apparently based on the Ultimate Fantastic Four origin where the cast is younger and enters a separate dimension where they are altered, not a space race. That’s okay but the stuff I love about FF is the crazy worlds like Mole Man’s underground kingdom, the Inhumans’ secret city of weirdos, Galactus eating planets. Also, Dr. Doom is one of my favorite villains because he’s so powerful – he rules a European kingdom, has the genius to build a suit of armor on par with Iron Man and has even mastered some of the magical arts. Allegedly he is a hacker in this movie who wants powers like the Fantastic Four. In the comics, the Fantastic Four become celebrities. They are scientists and a family who are beloved for protecting and bettering our world. This take looks like freaks trying to fit in. More like an X-Men story. I could be wrong. It just does not seem like FF to me.
We have a brand new trailer today for season 5 of Game of Thrones. I definitely trust the showrunners at this point but as a fan of the books, I am nervous about the stuff that seems to be excluded. I hope it all works!
One of my all-time favorite comedies is Wet Hot American Summer. Basically tons and tons of stuff happens and supposedly it’s all occurring on the last day of summer camp in 1981. Well, it’s 15 years later and the entire cast plus a lot more are all back together to do an 8-episode Netflix series which will take place on the first day of camp. We’re talking most of the cast of The State, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Janeane Garafolo, David Hyde Pierce and a lot more. The cast was already too old to be playing counselors but the idea of them now being 15 years older but doing a type of prequel is so ridiculous. I’m pretty excited. It’s an excellent cast. It’s directed by David Wain from The State so if you’ve enjoyed The State, Stella, Role Models or his webseries Wainy Days, you’ll like this. His humor is absurd, but he creates likable weirdo characters.
The Netflix series for Marvel character Jessica Jones is about a year away but they added two more key cast members. David Tennant, who played the Doctor on Doctor Who, will play Killgrave. He’s a really loathsome villain because he exudes pheromones that allow him to control anyone he’s near. Rachel Taylor (Grey’s Anatomy) also joined the cast as Trish “Patsy” Walker, Jessica’s friend and a radio host. In the comics, Patsy Walker was also Hellcat, a non-powered superhero. One of Marvel’s first characters, too, because she used to be the star of her own book before any superpowers, when Marvel did a bunch of Romance titles. It was kind of like Archie comics.
In the comics, Jessica Jones has an interesting back-story – she got flight and super strength and tried to be a superhero but it went terribly. She was controlled by Killgrave and the Avengers didn’t know it was mind control so they beat her up and put her in a coma. She gave up on the idea of being a superhero and now works as a private investigator, usually taking on cases involving super powered individuals. She has every reason to be a curmudgeon and she is.
UPDATE: While several legit media originally reported Terry Carter was killed, apparently it was a different Terry Carter. The actor is still alive.
Terry Carter, who played Colonel Tigh on the original Battlestar Galactica, died yesterday. Allegedly killed, actually. In an absolutely bizarre story, rap mogul Suge Knight backed his pickup truck over him and another man yesterday, killing Carter. Apparently they have been close friends but had an argument and witnesses say Knight backed over him twice. Super sad. So say we all.
Lego announced it will make the Hellicarrier from the Avengers movie. It strangely announced it as an exclusive at the Wall Street Journal, your first choice for nerdy toy news. Anyway, you can see some images below. It’s going to come out in March with 2,996 pieces, making it one of the largest sets Lego has made. Because of the scale, it will have little painted statuettes as figures instead of their traditional minifigs (although it will come with SHIELD agents Hawkeye, Maria Hill, Captain America, Nick Fury and Black Widow just for fun).
