Comic Tropes: Rob Liefeld

Rob Liefeld is one of the most popular artists in comics history. Whether you like his art or not, that’s just a fact. This week I list the recurring things you could count on seeing in Liefeld’s art. Then I go buy a random back issue and a ton of hot peppers and eat a hotter pepper every time I see one of his tropes. Ouch.

That was a little tough to watch. I was at times having sympathy heat flashbacks of past spicy dishes.

Even way back when, I never saw the appeal of Liefeld. He certainly does have a distinctive style, but I don’t get why he was so popular. I’ve often wondered if he just appeared at the perfect time. Everyone was looking for the next thing – publishers wanted the next Todd Macfarlane; speculators wanted the next “Amazing Fantasy” #15 (talk about a fantasy); the next generation of comic book readers wanted their own thing, something different from what came before that they could call their own.

Now this is a challenge I can get behind. I’m not much of a drinker, but I love me some spicey food. I also am more familiar with Liefeld than I am with some of your other comic tropes, because early – mid 90s was when I was heavy into reading comic books.

FYI, you need to get a bunch of those piquin peppers, or we call them chili pequins in my area, and get a bag of fritos. Pop a piquin in your mouth, with a frito or two, and something about those flavors mix so well.
I’ve had one of the peppers hotter than the ghost, called reaper. I took just a dime sized bite with a tortilla chip, and it tasted like tire fumes. I ended up eating habañero salsa to cool my mouth down from the reaper.

I was in trouble when I ended up with an extra hot jalapeno which is normally not too bad at all. I was suffering the rest of the day.

Ugh, I hate the jalapeno flavor, there’s no way I’d be able to make myself bite into one. I think it’s because I was first introduced to them through those nasty brown slices that came with crappy stadium nachos and cheese sauce, all of which make me gag.
Habaneros are my favorite, whether it’s salsa or just a straight pepper, they’re really tasty.
