Bean Counters Have Killed Wonder Woman

One of the best direct to DVD comic book films is Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern flick isn’t that bad either. Unfortunately, sales weren’t as high as they hoped so that means goodness is taken away from us. According to Bruce Timm, the god of anything DC and animated, has stated that there was a planned sequel to Wonder Woman, but since sales were slow the studio decided to shit can it. Even worse, that means no more Batgirl film or any other DC female centric flick. What utter crap.

We had originally planned to do sequels for Wonder Woman [but] sales started out extremely slow and then over time were eventually able to catch up to probably Justice League Frontier. The execs decided because it wasn’t able to sell quickly right away, where as Justice League was, that there wouldn’t be any more female super hero films right now. We were developing and hoping to get started on a batgirl film based on Year One, but because of Wonder Woman’s slow sales start, that won’t be happening now.

Just because a DVD takes a bit to catch on doesn’t mean it’s a failure and if it eventually is successful, wouldn’t a follow up only build on that initial success?

  • You’re applying logic, which doesn’t really function when it comes to the bean counters. Like Mattel requiring a sell-out in a certain amount of time (two weeks for DCUC? Really?) it’s all about speed rather than quantity. They fail to understand that DVD sales aren’t theater sales.. word of mouth takes longer but adds up to more sales. How many movies have failed at the box office and gone on to sell millions of DVDs?

Which is why should be wary of a live action movie and whom they cast. The ad/casting wizards @ WB claim “Wonder Woman is tricky” or some such nonsense. Probably she’s a female comic character and there are hardly any other successful comic books that carry a female lead on the market right now or in history for that matter. Wonder Woman is it.

And look at the horrible casting for something like Catwoman. As a *black* woman? I heard there were similar rumblings about bringing Beyonce in for Wonder Woman. This really makes no sense at all. On a related note, if Chris Nolan casts Beyonce as Catwoman, I will literally throw this laptop out the window. Known for his “offbeat” casting decisions. The man doesn’t have a clue sometimes..

  • No Batgirl?

I live a quick bus-ride away form the WB studios, I think it’s time to go slash some tires again.
