Today, Entertainment Weekly announced that the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. for season four of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been announced. Well, the actor anyway. Jason O’Mara, who has geek cred for voicing Batman and being in sci-fi stuff like Terra Nova and Life on Mars, will play the new leader.
But perhaps most interesting is that EW says he will have ties to Marvel Comics from 1940. Well, that limits the options pretty fast because there aren’t too many characters from that time that are still around: Captain America, Sub-Mariner and Human Torch are the most prominent. As in the original, android Human Torch. And that’s who I bet this is.
Now, Fox owns Human Torch from Fantastic Four so I don’t expect him to be Human Torch, but he had a civilian identity – Jim Hammond, police officer. When you keep in mind that the final scenes of season three dealt with mad scientist Holden Radcliffe working on LMDs for S.H.I.E.L.D., a key part of S.H.I.E.L.D. comics mythology – Life Model Decoys. Androids. Could that tech be derived from an android that’s been around since 1940? The addition of Jim Hammond could offer ties to stuff like Captain America (where he was a background cameo) and Agent Carter. Plus, the guy joined S.H.I.E.L.D. in some of the more recent comics. I think it just makes sense.
