So you’ve decided to donate for Toys for Tots (and hopefully enter Geeks For Tots) and you’re not going to do the online donation thing, which is nice and all, but you’re going to donate a physical toy(s). You might be wondering what you should get. Well, here’s a tip: Don’t get junk.
This should be a no brainer, unfortunately when people get stuff for charity they sometimes pass off things that isn’t exactly desirable. Digging out the generic lima beans out of the back of the cupboard for a food drive is not cool, just like busting out a CORPS figure for Toys For Tots is not cool. Basically, don’t give a lima bean to a kid this Christmas.
My rule of thumb is this: Give something that YOU would want to get as a kid. That might be a little difficult for the Moms and Grandmas of the world who don’t know jack about toys these days, but if you’re reading this you’re probably a geek. You know what’s good and what’s bad. You’ve seen those figures sitting on the shelf for a year or two. You know nobody wants them. I mean, if a toy has been on clearance for over a year even the kids that can’t afford regular priced toys don’t want them. Instead, get a cool figure/vehicle/playset or whatever that you’d want. If your buying yourself a toy that is pretty cool, just pick up a second one for the tots. And don’t forget that some of that crazy stuff that doesn’t appeal to collectors (like a Captain America with lots of action features) will appeal to kids.
Now get out there and donate!
